Throughout his life Denzil was a tinkerer who loved making mechanical, electrical and electronic gagetry. He would have learned this skill from his father who was an engineer with the PMG (the ancestor of today’s Telstra) and had a well-equipped home workshop.

When Denzil was living with his parents in Castlemaine during the 1930s, he and a friend built a three-wheeled home-made car, then dressed up as a couple of country gentlemen and drove the vehicle through the streets of Castlemaine. (Denzil is on the right of the photo)
